Not sure if you've read any Joan Didion, but she does a lot of this kind of thinking in her book "A Year of Magical Thinking" about the death of her husband. Very poignant writing, but also tragic.
I haven’t read that one, but I just finished The Correspondence which was fantastic and included fictional letters with Joan Didion regarding that book! I think I need to start it next.

I also loved Blue Nights by Joan Didion, about the death of her daughter. She really experienced a lot of family tragedy but she writes beautifully about it.

She has some great books! Her journalism is great too.
